As the initiative nears its end the Stamp Duty holiday has been named a failure as it significantly misses the government target.
According to research by Zoopla, a combined £173 million has been saved by 115,447 buyers thanks to the tax break which is due to end on 31st December.
Yet, with the government's target of £600 million, this figure has had far less of an impact than originally hoped.
Paul Holmes, Chief Executive of Firstrung, specialist in first-time buyer property advice, said: "If the initiative was to jumpstart first-time buyers into the housing market then it has been a desperate failure."
First-time buyers in North Down have been affected least by the tax break as the higher value of property in this area of Northern Ireland puts significantly less property below the £175,000 bracket.
